The two boards are connected by tape on the front which impacts the art. Production paste-ups on both left and right margins but these are relatively insignificant images relative to the whole, oversized work. Trade dressing is on an acetate overlay affixed by tape at the top by tape.
Note: Boards have some staining and discoloration. The Handbook was updated a couple of more times in later years as well. A couple of years later, Marvel published an updated edition to reflect all of the changes. In the days before Wikipedia, the way to learn all about your favorite Marvel characters was The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe! The first volume appeared starting in 1983. Some of the other more well-known characters on the piece are the Black Panther, Banshee, Binary (Carol Danvers), Black Bolt, Black Cat, Black Knight, Blastaar, Blob, Caliban, Cannonball, Johnny Blaze, Brother Voodoo, Captain Britain, Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau), the Celestials, and the Circus of Crime. Most of the characters featured in the issue appear on the cover, with Captain America, the Beast, Black Widow, Clea and Beta-Ray Bill receiving the most prominent placement. This issue covered characters from "Beast" through "Clea"'. Every issue of the Handbook covered a portion of Marvel's characters in alphabetical order.

Byrne was one of the top artists working in comic books in the late 1980s, so he was the natural choice to be the cover artist on this series featuring dozens of Marvel characters on each issue's cover. The Byrne/Rubenstein team provided all the covers for the second edition of The Handbook, which was referred to as the "Deluxe Edition". This is John Byrne's character-packed wrap-around cover to the second issue of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe (2nd Edition) with inks by Joe Rubinstein.
